Green Reading: An Exploratory Analysis of Quality Children’s Literature

In an attempt to explore the idea of “green” reading and the potential of picture story books in early childhood environmental education, an exploratory content analysis of medal-winning picture books was conducted. The analysis focused on these books in terms of their suitability to develop nature appreciation in pre-school children. According to analysis results, 20% of the books have a nature appreciation focus and are appropriate for pre-school children. As a result of the study, it is recommended that teachers and parents access Notable Book winners as a possible way to develop the first stages of environmental literacy in pre-school children. Future studies could explore the children’s responses to such books as a means of infusing an appreciation of nature in a positive and developmentally appropriate way.Teachers, practitioners, parents, and students who are interested in Early Childhood Education are welcomed to join.
