HKJC "CoolPlay" Project 4th "Parent-Child Exploratory Learning Carnival – Light & Shadow Party” took place successfully from 29 to 30 March in Kwun Tong, featuring 11 interactive game booths designed to encourage young children to actively explore, observe, and learn through play.
Supported by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and co-organized by Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education (YCCECE) and Hong Kong Christian Service, the Jockey Club "CoolPlay" Project has upheld a child-centered philosophy since its second phase launched in 2023. The project provides innovative teaching resources, training, and support to early childhood educators and parents, guiding children to adopt exploratory learning—both in school and daily life—to develop essential 21st-century skills such as creativity, communication, and collaboration. The 4th edition of the Jockey Club "CoolPlay" Project's "Parent-Child Exploratory Learning Carnival – Light & Shadow Party" took place on March 29-30 in Kwun Tong, featuring 11 interactive game booths designed to encourage young children to actively explore, observe, and learn through play. This year’s event fostered problem-solving skills and a spirit of inquiry by motivating children to ask questions and seek solutions. Additionally, the inaugural "Kindergarten Learning Corner Design Competition" winning schools showcased their innovative setups. The two-day free event attracted over 2,000 children and parents.
Dr. Brad Chan from YCCECE said: "This year’s carnival takes light and shadow as its theme, with the creative approach of transforming an abstract concept into a form that young children can experience firsthand. Unlike traditional activities, our design allows children to independently explore, discover questions, and seek answers, nurturing their curiosity about the world. The theme of light and shadow not only sparks multisensory interest but also naturally guides children to explore everyday phenomena—this is the essence of inquiry-based learning."
First-Ever "Kindergarten EdCorner Setup Competition" Held in February – Winning Designs from 6 Kindergartens to Be Showcased at Carnival
The environment serves as a child’s "third teacher," and well-designed learning spaces can naturally guide young children’s exploration. To promote this concept, the Jockey Club "CoolPlay" Project held its inaugural "Kindergarten EdCorner Setup Competition" in February this year, which received enthusiastic support and participation from the education sector. A professional judging panel evaluated entries based on six key criteria: child appropriateness, inquiry-based questioning, material usage, environmental ambiance, documentation of learning processes, and aesthetic appeal. Six kindergartens (listed in no particular order) emerged as winners:
The winning schools showcased their award-winning setups at the "Parent-Child Exploratory Learning Carnival – Light & Shadow Party," demonstrating how intentional environmental design can successfully integrate with inquiry-based learning to unlock young children’s learning potential.
To strengthen the "home-school-community" collaboration network, this year’s carnival introduces the "Smart • Play • Learn Exploration Kit Feedback Station." Here, families can share their creative ideas about the exploration kits while engaging with various "Light & Shadow" interactive installations. The initiative aims to gather children’s voices widely, inviting young learners, parents, and teachers to co-design child-friendly exploration kits, ensuring the materials truly resonate with their needs.
Additionally, the "Teaching Resources – JumpStarter" online platform has officially launched. This platform offers over 100 inquiry-based activities, allowing children and parents to conduct exploratory learning at home, then upload their learning journeys and reflections. Teachers and other parents can interact, exchange feedback, and learn from one another, fostering stronger home-school collaboration.
To recognize families who actively participate on the platform and contribute constructive insights, the initiative has established the "Smart • Play • Learn Outstanding Explorer Family Award." From numerous participants, five families will be honored as the first recipients of this award during the carnival. The award aims to inspire more young children and parents to join, collectively expanding the platform into Hong Kong’s largest inquiry-based learning community for early childhood education.
