To help parents of new students gain a deeper understanding of the College’s educational philosophy, student development support, and students’ learning and living experiences in Hong Kong, while strengthening communication and connections between the College and families, Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education (YCCECE) held a Parents Orientation on 11 September. Members of the College leadership, faculty, Student Development Office, student and alumni representatives and parents of new students gathered on campus to embark together on a new academic year of growth.

The event began with an engaging and welcoming interaction led by the moderator, Assistant Professor Dr Rohnii Tse.

Ms Cathy Li, Vice-President (Operations and Development), delivered a welcome address and extended a warm welcome to all parents. She noted that students’ growth depends on the joint support and companionship of the College and their families. She expressed the hope that the event would help parents gain a better understanding of the College, establish closer and more effective communication between the College and families, and work together with parents to support students in their learning and personal growth in Hong Kong.

Ms Florence Liu, Family Psychotherapist, and Ms Lui Ling-hung, Counsellor, shared their insights on the theme of “Positive Parenting”. From the perspectives of parent-child communication, family support and youth development, the speakers explored with parents how to adjust their approach to supporting their children as they enter university and gradually move towards an independent stage of life. They highlighted the importance of understanding, encouragement and appropriate support, while giving young people greater space to grow and explore.

Professor Kerry Lee, President of the YCCECE, welcomed the parents and expressed his appreciation for their trust and support. Parents also engaged in discussions with faculty members on topics of concern, including their children’s studies, campus life and future development.

Assistant Professor Dr Liu Qing, Acting Dean of Studies, shared insights under the theme “From Admission to Development: Learning, Internships and Career Preparation for Mainland Students in Hong Kong”. She introduced the College’s curriculum, campus adjustment support, personal development opportunities, internships and career preparation. Ms. Chung Pui Hei, Assistant Manager (Career Development) of the Student Development Office, then provided an overview of the services and developmental support available to students.
