As a practicum manager in YCCECE, I play a crucial role in embracing the Yew Chung Approach to Early Childhood Education in my lectures. The YC Approach emphasises a holistic and child-centred approach to learning, focusing on the development of the whole child. And I believe the Yew Chung Approach is the best for child development, so I am always happy to share my understanding with student-teachers to support them in applying the YC Approach in their practicum.
First are respect and relationships. As teachers, we must create a nurturing and inclusive environment where children feel valued, respected, and supported. We build strong relationships with children, parents, and colleagues, fostering a sense of trust and collaboration. We model positive communication, empathy, and understanding, promoting social-emotional development and a sense of belonging. So, Yew Chung Values 1 to 4 are the foundation and also a first step to making you have a successful journey in your practicum.
Besides that, I also share with student-teachers how important child-centered and play-based learning are. We have to prioritise the needs and interests of each child, ensuring that the activities are tailored to the child's development and learning styles. We also recognise the importance of play in children's learning and development. We encourage active exploration, hands-on experiences, and open-ended questions to stimulate critical thinking and problem-solving skills. We have to design a rich and stimulating play environment that encourages imaginative play, creativity, and self-expression. We have to understand that play is a natural and meaningful way for children to explore, discover, and make sense of the world around them.
Last but not least, it’s also a very important part of being a good teacher. As a good teacher, we engage in ongoing reflection and professional development to enhance our teaching practice.
In summary, as YCCECE practicum manager, I always encourage our student-teachers to embrace the Yew Chung Approach by prioritising child-centred learning, fostering respectful relationships, promoting play-based learning, and engaging in reflective practice.
