Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education (YCCECE) organised an insightful workshop titled "Qualitative Research is More Than Just Research with Qualitative Data" on 28 November 2025. The session featured Dr Lam Ho Cheong from the Department of Early Childhood Education at The Education University of Hong Kong as the guest speaker.

Dr Lam illuminated the distinct philosophical foundations of qualitative research, which necessitate different approaches from hypothesis-driven quantitative studies. He demonstrated its practical value through his research, such as analysing children’s Chinese character writing errors to develop tailored learning software, and categorising how kindergarten teachers enact writing instruction to foster reflective practice.

The workshop provided strategic guidance on research grant applications. Dr Lam compared methodological principles and offered frank advice on crafting competitive proposals, including a detailed discussion on the advantages and challenges of employing mixed methods designs.

The workshop successfully equipped YCCECE faculty with in-depth methodological understanding and practical strategies for designing rigorous qualitative studies and navigating the funding landscape, thereby strengthening the College's research culture.
